Marcella Sabbagh

Marcella Sabbagh was raised here and has deep roots in Lewes, DE. During grade school, she participated in track & field, lacrosse, and tennis. She enjoyed them all but fell in love with field hockey. Marcella was part of the defensive wall for her high school team and was a key part of leading them to three State Championships. In addition, she was a two-time first-team All-Conference selection, she secured a pair of All-State honors which included First Team All-State her senior year, was one of the top 10 Field Hockey players in the state by the Delaware News Journal and was rated the No. 1 defender in the Cape Henlopen conference in addition to being named a Captain of her team in 2018. 

After making the decision to pursue her education in business, Marcella decided to attend Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA.  It was here that she continued her passion for leadership and field hockey. Playing for a competitive DIII team afforded her many opportunities. As a freshman, Marcella stepped right on to the field as a key player and made history. Synapse Sports National All-Rookie Team, Second-team all-conference, All-state accolades and established a new freshman record for obtaining six defensive saves which also was marked as the second highest in the CAC. As a freshman she was the only freshman at any level of the NCAA to finish a year with at least five assists and five defensive saves. She also made history as becoming the first freshman field player in NCAA history to achieve the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the week. Marcella also went on to obtain additional All-Conference and All-State recognitions for the remainder of her stay at CNU. Marcella also added to her record-breaking career by tallying 9 strokes which she obtained during her senior season.

Marcella had the honor of playing with the Puerto Rican National Field Hockey Team. As part of this team, Marcella traveled with them to Bermuda for the CAC games. It was there that her strong defensive skills assisted the team to a second-place finish in the tournament.

Marcella graduates from CNU in May of 2023 with a degree from the prestigious Luter School of Business. Her bachelor’s degree in business management was well rounded with real-world experiences which included a study abroad in Italy. In addition, her minor in Leadership Studies emphasized her service to the community which earned Marcella a Service Distinction award from the University. 

Marcella has participated as an assistant to the Cape Hockey Field Hockey Coaches since her graduation there for the team’s summer camp sessions. In addition, Marcella was also a visiting coach for Stickpower and assisted camps, playdays, and ID Clinics for the CNU Field Hockey Team as well.
